About

Who I am

Hi, I'm Yang Xu, a Master's student in Sustainable Energy and Process Engineering at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). My academic journey uniquely bridges Automotive Engineering, Computational Science, and Bioprocess Engineering.

I thrive at the intersection of hands-on experimentation and digital modeling. Whether I'm upgrading membrane filtration systems at the Bio-Scale up Center, simulating energy optimizations (like my recent team effort at the Energy x AI Hackathon), or coordinating technical and visual design for large-scale events like AHMUNC, I love merging mechanical intuition with data-driven solutions for a cleaner industrial future.

Outside of research, I love to explore and create. As a tech enthusiast, I enjoy the precise feel of polishing projects with code, and I find a deep sense of focus in rowing and swimming. I'm passionate about life—whether that means perfecting Chinese and Japanese dishes, experimenting with beef recipes, watching anime and Hong Kong cinema, or revisiting retro classics like Red Alert 2 on my Mac.

Experience

Where I've worked

  1. 10.2025 — 03.2026

Research Intern — Membrane Filtration Technology

Refurbished a bench-scale MaxiMem filtration unit: redesigned the P&I diagram, integrated a continuous feeding system, and procured custom 0.2 µm PES flat sheet membranes optimized for hydrophilicity and low protein-binding. Set up an Ecograph-T multichannel recorder with FDM software for automated data acquisition and authored a comprehensive SOP including CIP protocols. Validated system performance with pure water flux tests and C. glutamicum broth filtration, achieving 96.24% biomass retention.

  2. 07.2022 — 01.2023

    Intern — Quality Assistant

Built 3D models in SolidWorks for product design and documentation, performed dimensional quality inspections, and researched technical standards (ASME Y14.5, ASTM E2660) for testing procedures. Operated SST chambers per ISO 9227 for corrosion testing, supported metallographic analysis workflows, and provided technical translation between engineers and suppliers.

  3. 12.2018 — 08.2019

Director of Technology & Promotion (Organizing Committee)

AHMUNC 2019 — Anhui Model United Nations Conference · Suzhou, China

Coordinated cross-departmental planning and scheduling for a large-scale conference. Designed promotional materials using Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.

What's next

I'm looking for opportunities — internship, research positions, or full-time roles near Munich / Regensburg, Germany — where process engineering, modeling, and sustainability meet. Sustainable energy / clean tech, process simulation & digital twins, and AI/ML applications for energy systems are especially interesting to me. If you're working on these problems, I'd love to talk.
